The weekend of August 22-24, 2008 over 450 Alpine Alums and their families along with camp friends celebrated Alpine Camp for Boys' 50th summer of camping. It was an incredible experience as friendships were renewed and generations of former campers returned to the mountain they loved so much as a boy. 140 men arrived at camp on Friday night, August 22nd, in time for the traditional chicken pot pie which is always served as the opening meal of every camp session. Mrs. Crow's chicken pot pie has been a favorite meal of Alpine campers and staff since 1959, and Mrs. Crow's daughter, Gail Collins, has continued that tradition with those same wonderful little biscuits. Supper Friday night was followed by games on the Athletic Field led by Bill (Tree) Jamieson. From the Athletic Field the group moved to the gym for several competitive games of Slaughter Ball and then on to Council Ring for an evening of sharing camp stories along with Pat Caldwell giving his own impersonation of Johnny Carson's Carnack the Magnificent. The woods rang with laughter as the men returned to their cabins and you could hear the “Do you remember whens?” as they headed off to bed.
Saturday was filled with all sorts of activities including archery, riflery, team sports, tennis, Water Park, canoeing, Project Adventure, Climbing, Bouldering, and swimming. Probably the most popular activity was a seminar led by Bill Boyd entitled Camp Culture: Establishing Patterns of Mature Manhood. Saturday evening we were joined by numerous additional former campers and counselors with their families for a magnificent barbeque on the athletic field. Chattanooga's popular blue grass band, The Dismembered Tennesseans, entertained while dinner was served.
After the Barbeque everyone gathered in the gym for entertainment and the sharing of reflections by different staff members. Bo Edwards of Evergreen, CO took us back to the night programs of the summers of ‘69, ‘70, and ‘71 with his banjo playing and his renditions of Them Moose Goosers and Them Duck Pluckers.
Sunday morning, we all gathered at the bend of the road when the bell rang for morning worship. Dick & Alice O'Ferrall, Glenn & Carter Breazeale, and Toy & Doug Harmon led the way as all of the alumni and guests walked out to the gym as Stevens Shuler played the bagpipes. It was a beautiful service with many of the alums who are ministers participating in leading the service. Dr. Will Jones (camper '79-'85 counselor '89-'92) delivered the message using I Corinthians 13 as his text. Other alums participating in the service were Rev. Bill Boyd, Rev. Wade Cox, Rev. Tee Gatewood, Rev. Kyle Livingston, and Rev. Claude McRoberts. Musicians were Lawrence Eaton, Robert Heiskell, and Weldon Pless. Being able to join together as a camp family and thank God for His faithfulness to Alpine Camp for Boys over the past 50 years was the perfect ending to a wonderful weekend.
