Dear Alpine Family,

We hope this letter finds you safe after the brutal storms that mangled the Southeast yesterday. Thankfully, everyone here at camp is safe and sound. However, our power is out and TVA authorities inform us that it will not return for at least three days.

Because of this, we have decided to postpone our Father/Son Weekend until May 20 – 22. Our reasoning is two-fold:

First, we feel that we are currently unable to offer the caliber of weekend that you deserve.
Second, we want to allow you to help those in your communities devastated by these storms.

We are grateful that we can still offer this retreat in May. We look forward to an incredible weekend full of exciting activities and an eager summer staff. If you are unable to attend the new weekend, we will happily offer a full refund. We hope that you can join us and apologize for this inconvenience. Our thoughts and prayers are with those of you affected by this tragedy.

Sincerely,
Glenn & Carter.

During the night of April 27, a major storm swept through northern Alabama (and much of the southeast) and hit Alpine hard. No one was hurt, praise God, and damage to the property was minimal, but we have been left without power, phones, or an internet connection.

We’re working to resolve the outage as soon as possible but if you try to contact us without receiving a response, you’ll know why. We look forward to talking to you once our communications are restored.

You’ll never see Roderick Russ walking at Alpine. At his slowest, you might catch our 2nd Term Program Director at a brisk jog. He’s like the Energizer bunny of camp directors. You should have seen him on the last day of second term this summer. Roderick baked up a scheme to cram almost every Alpine activity into a single afternoon–a camp wide relay of epic proportions. It was a masterpiece. Campers and counselors alike sprinted from Team Sports to Basketball to Tennis to Crafts and on and on with a startling level of organization. Only Roderick could pull something like that off, and he did it neither breaking stride nor a sweat.

It comes as no surprise then, that our own Roderick Russ has been awarded High School Cross Country Coach of the Year by The Tennessean. In his other life–the one he leads the other 11 months of the year–Roderick coaches and teaches at Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, TN. This year, Roderick led the team to their second consecutive Division II-AA title, and the team set a new state record with a perfect score of 15.

Roderick’s passion and enthusiasm has always shined at Alpine, so it is exciting for us to hear of his successes back in Nashville. If you happen to see him running, shout out a “Congratulations!” He may not slow down his pace, but I’m sure he’ll appreciate it.
